May Day... May Day... May Day!

May 1st is MAY DAY!... and it's been a tradition in my family forever....When I was a little kid... I would go to the Flower Shop and make May Baskets with my Mom... I would poke colored pipe cleaners through paper cups... to make a handle! Then I would fill the Paper cup with Flowers... either a SMALL Blooming Plant from the Garden Center... (Like a Petunia)... or stick a piece of foam in the cup and poke in flowers... (many times there were short flowers or broken heads that my Dad had saved in the cooler... these Were PERFECT!)... to make the May Baskets! My Mom and I would create a list... Family, Friends... Senior Ladies... Favorite Clients... The Baby Sitter or Ironing Lady... (we had an ironing lady...go figure)...Neighbors... (we made about 2 dozen or so...)Then Mom and I would load up in the car and ride around town... she would pull up to the house... and I would run up to the door with a May Basket... ring the bell and RUN...BECAUSE if you got caught... they could KISS YOU... Right??!! That's the RULE...Now... for a 6 year old... I didn't want to get to "caught" or worse: kissed... but in some cases... my Mom would make me "WALK" so I could get "CAUGHT" by some of the Ladies... (My Aunt Alyce, Florence Love... she made CUTE stuffed animals by hand... and I would take the "KISS" because then she let me pick out a stuffed animal... Dorothy:My Nanny... I NEVER Minded getting a Kiss and Hug from her...) It was FUN game...and in hindsight.... I think it was Really FUN for the People that got the May Baskets...I can still remember sitting in my Mom's Thunderbird... with the box of May Baskets on my Lap... the smell of the vinyl seats... and the Petunias...And when we got home... there was usually a few May Baskets at our front door... filled with Candy. Candy was popular in the 60's... Flowers were the EXCEPTION...I prefer the Flowers...  and ALL in ALL.... I think it was Better for everyone to "RUN SLOW"... Don't you???Happy May Day!
