In the Spotlight…Featured uBloomer, Rebecca Jordan
Rebecca Jordan lives in Dayton, NV and co-owns (with family) Sierra Rose Floral & Gifts, a florist shop in nearby Carson City, NV. She is engaged to be married and is currently the most popular author to post in uBloom’s Articles section. Way to go Rebecca! How did you get your start in the florist business? While attending college, I took an apprentice position at a local florist where I worked for several years. When the owner decided to sell last August, my family and I purchased the business. We chose to keep the name, Sierra Rose, because it is well known and popular here in Carson City. What is your favorite flower?Thats easy, the Stargazer Lily! I love the way they look and smell. They are really hardy flowers so I don’t have to worry about them wilting on me. The only thing I don’t like about them is the pollen…it gets everywhere! What is the best and worst thing about owning a florist shop? The best thing is getting to meet all kinds of people from every walk of life. And where my shop is located, we certainly get all kinds! The worst thing about owning a florist shop is around holiday time, it seems to bring all the greedy people out of the woodwork. Some customers even lie to try and get free flowers. What was the most unusual floral piece that you designed for a customer?I designed a 6′x6′, gold and blue "star" made with over 800 carnations for a police mans’ memorial service. It took us a whole day just to dye the white carnations blue and yellow and then cover them with a gold glitter spray. The entire design took 4 days to complete.Do you have any well known clients?Yes, the Governor of Nevada orders from us. We were also the chosen florist of Extreme Home Makeover Edition when they were in town.If you could design flowers for any celebrity, who would it be?Wow, that’s a hard one. I think I would choose Queen Latifa. I’ve heard that she isn’t a "diva" and that when she orders flowers, she pretty much lets the florist have free reign in the choice of flowers and designs made. What is the best selling item in your shop?We have two. A mixed, Spring flower bouquet and one dozen red roses. Not all that exciting but they sell like hot cakes! What are some hobbies or activities you enjoy in your spare time?I come from a family of musicians, so I enjoy singing and playing the clarinet. I am also the head of my church dance team and I enjoy crafting such a woodworking. After I make it, I sell it in the shop!If you could invent a product or tool to help floral designers design better, what would you invent?I would invent a computer program that would let you build bouquets flower by flower. You could add and take away flowers just by a click of the mouse. That way you could see what your bouquets would look like before ordering or using any actual product. It would be a great tool when consulting with brides. After designing the bouquet, you could "save" the recipe.Fun Stuff! On a recent outing to their local Farmer’s Market, Rebecca and her family were approached by a couple who told them that they had named their daughter after Rebecca’s shop. Sierra Rose is now 18 and attending college. How cool is that?
