Dahlia Daze- No Frost yet!
Thanks to a very warm fall... we've not had any frost yet. In years past... I remember sometimes having to cover the garden on Labor Day weekend... but whether you believe it or not... Global warming is affecting our Michigan Fall...Typically Color tours start in our area at the end of September... and they are in full swing the first two weeks of October... but the trees are still green and there's no frost in the forecast... at least for the next week or so...Obviously things can change... but the days are getting cooler... and the nights are crisp and clear... that's fall and my favorite season... that's why I Love living in Michigan so much!In turn... there are other perks... The Dahlias for example... if you remember our uBloom crew visited the famous Hamilton Dahlia Farm in Hamilton Michigan... where the original 3 Dahlias for 50 cents originated on the back of the Kellogg's cereal boxes many years ago...Watch the visit to Hamilton Dahlia Farm here! And you'll notice in the video... that Janet talks about closing the farm... (and she did)... leaving us without this amazing resource... but NEVER FEAR!I was delighted to meet the owners of Hope Dahlias... Kirsten Farmer (Great Name eh???) and Barb Esch... who purchased many of the tubers from Janet but also started their own collection... They have been at the Fulton Street Farmers market... and they are growing these amazing dahlias...So many varieties and colors... and as Barb told me this week... "you know the late frost has caused the dahlias to become even more vibrant... it's amazing"...Well Amazed I am... I love these two ladies... and their amazing flowers- they are out of this world... so much so... that I can't resist taking them on TV (Watch WZZM My West Michigan Thursday for my LIVE Segment with Hope Dahlias)... or having them scattered all around the house...I "HOPE" the frost holds off a bit longer... I'm in a Dahlia Daze!!!!
