Baskets are a great example of this. Many baskets look great with flowers in them but the wicker basket does not hold water. So a plastic or waterproof liner is placed inside the basket and concealed by the flowers themselves. This allows you a lot more creativity when selecting a container. (Also great for paper mache or other decorative non-waterproof options)
